Self-Care: Truths vs Myths

We've all heard the promises: shrink your pores, train your hair to be less oily, cure your skin problems with the right routine. The self-care industry is full of claims that sound scientific but often aren't backed by evidence. Here's the thing, though, even when the physical promises are myths, the psychological benefits of self-care routines can be very real.

Let's separate fact from fiction and explore what self-care actually does for your mental health.

The Myths: What Self-Care Can't Do

You can't shrink your pores. Pore size is largely determined by genetics. No cream, toner, or treatment will permanently make them smaller. They may appear temporarily smaller when clean or when the skin is well-hydrated, but the actual structure doesn't change.

You can't "train" your hair to be less oily. The idea that washing your hair less frequently will make it produce less oil isn't supported by science. Your sebaceous glands produce oil based on genetics and hormones, not your washing schedule.

Face-washing doesn't cure acne. While keeping skin clean is part of good hygiene, excessive face-washing won't clear acne and may actually irritate your skin. Acne is a complex condition involving hormones, genetics, and inflammation and is not simply "dirty" skin.

Expensive products aren't necessarily better. The cosmetic industry thrives on the promise that the right product will transform your skin, but price doesn't correlate with effectiveness. Many affordable products contain the same active ingredients as luxury brands.

The Truths: What Self-Care Actually Does

Here's where it gets interesting: even though many physical claims are exaggerated, the act of having a self-care routine genuinely benefits your mental health.

Routines create structure and predictability. Having a nighttime skincare routine, a morning ritual, or any consistent self-care practice helps create low-stress, predictable patterns in your day. Research shows that repetitive, structured behaviors can help reduce anxiety by giving your brain a sense of control and order.

The ritual matters more than the result. Studies on facial skincare routines found that the practice itself induces measurable physiological relaxation, increased brain relaxation, decreased heart rate, and reduced muscle tension. Participants also reported more positive emotions. The act of caring for yourself sends a signal to your brain that you matter.

Self-care is associated with better mental health outcomes. Research consistently shows that people who engage in regular self-care practices experience improvements in wellbeing and reductions in anxiety and depression. It's not about perfect skin or hair! It's about the message you're sending yourself through consistent, caring actions.

Taking time for yourself is protective. Whether it's a skincare routine, a bath, listening to music, or any other personal ritual, carving out time that's just for you reinforces the idea that your wellbeing matters. This isn't selfish; it's essential.

What This Means for You

Self-care doesn't have to be expensive, time-consuming, or based on achieving physical perfection. The real benefit comes from:

  • Consistency over perfection: A simple routine you actually do is better than an elaborate one you skip.

  • Intentionality: Being present during your self-care activities, rather than rushing through them.

  • Self-compassion: Treating yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a friend.

  • Realistic expectations: Understanding that self-care supports mental health, not miraculous physical transformations.

Your nighttime routine doesn't need to involve ten steps and hundreds of dollars in products. It needs to be something that feels caring, that you can sustain, and that signals to yourself: "I'm worth this time and attention."

The Bottom Line

The self-care industry sells a lot of myths about what products and routines can do for your appearance. But the truth is simpler and more powerful: the act of caring for yourself, regardless of the physical results, genuinely supports your mental health and wellbeing.

So go ahead and enjoy your skincare routine, your hair care ritual, or whatever form of self-care resonates with you. Just know that the real magic isn't in shrinking your pores or training your hair. It's in the consistent message you're sending yourself that you deserve care, attention, and kindness.
