emotional eating

Emotional eating is eating because of how you feel rather than because your body is physically hungry.
Stress, boredom, loneliness, sadness, anger, anxiety, PMS ladies or even wanting comfort after a long day can trigger it. It might look like grabbing ice cream after a breakup, snacking when you're stressed at work, or thinking, “I need something sweet after the day I've had.” You may eat more than you planned, but you generally still feel like you are making the decision to eat and could stop if you wanted to. Emotional eating can happen occasionally or frequently, and by itself does not mean someone has an eating disorder.
Binge eating feels different because of the loss of control.
Once it starts, there may be a feeling of “I can't stop this” or “I need to keep going until it's gone.” You might eat rapidly, feel almost zoned out or disconnected, and continue even though you're uncomfortable or part of you desperately wants to stop. Emotions can absolutely trigger a binge you know like stress, anxiety, sadness, restriction, or feeling overwhelmed but the defining experience is that the eating feels like it has taken over rather than something you're consciously choosing to do.
An easy way to think about it:
Emotional eating = “I’m eating because I feel something.”
Binge eating = “I feel like I’ve lost control of the eating.” The two can overlap, but they aren't the same thing.
