Are your appetite hormones out of sync?

Signs the system (aka hunger hormone regulation) may be struggling

None of these prove a hormone problem, but together they can point to disrupted appetite signaling:

  • Rarely feeling full, even after a full meal

  • Frequent cravings or intrusive thoughts about food ("food noise")

  • Hunger that intensifies dramatically when dieting

  • Weight that climbs or resists loss despite real effort

  • Poor sleep, high chronic stress, or shift work

Certain situations easily and oftentimes disrupt these hormones, such as chronic sleep loss, ongoing stress, inflammation, very restrictive dieting, and eating patterns that come with conditions like binge eating.

What about testing?

For everyday weight concerns and emotional or excessive eating, routine ghrelin and leptin blood tests are not recommended and generally aren't helpful. Here's why:

  • The tests are mostly used in research, not routine care.

  • "Normal" ranges are wide and overlap heavily between people who are lean and those with obesity, so a single number rarely changes what you should do.

  • No major medical guideline endorses ordering a ghrelin/leptin panel to manage common obesity or emotional eating.

  • Knowing your leptin is high (which it usually is with excess weight) doesn't change the treatment because the problem is resistance, not the number.
